It can’t be denied that the 1966 Animated film and the 2000 live action film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas has stolen the hearts of children and adults around the world. I know our family has made it a tradition to watch the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas every December 1st. We also love watching the live action film with Jim Carey as well during the Christmas season. Our children also love reading the book all year round. I know so many people who love the book and movie but didn’t know how it came about.
In May 1955 the Grinch first made his appearance in a edition of Rebook magazine, a 32 line illustrated poem by Dr.Seuss called “The Hoobub and the Grinch”. A few years later on December 26th 1956 Dr. Seuss was looking in the mirror and felt like he was a Grinch himself and was trying to figure out how to find his Christmas spirit back.
Dr. Seuss then began his work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Mr. Geisel was very busy at this time with just finishing the book “The Cat in the Hat” and was just starting the company Beginner Books with Phyllis and Bennett Cerf and his wife Helen. His wife Helen was also going through medical issues and suffered a small stroke in April of 1957. She was still determined to help her husband and acted as an unofficial editor as she did previously with Dr.Seuss books.
Dr. Seuss love for the Grinch made it one of the easiest books for him to write in his career having written in within a few weeks. The only problem he had was with his conclusion to the book. Mr. Geisel was hung up on getting the Grinch out of the mess he put himself into. He felt he sounded like a second-rate preacher or some biblical truism. After three months of anguish he realized how to finish his book. By mid-May 1957 his book was finished and he sent it out to Random House office in New York. Him and his wife then took a well needed vacation after the book was complete and his wife’s stroke to Hawaii for a Month.
The book How the Grinch Stole Christmas then made its debut in December 1957. It was issued as both an issue of Redbook Magazine and a book version published by Random House. The book was dedicated to his nieces one-year-old son Theodor teddy Owens.
The book was adapted into a Christmas movie twice and a new one is expect in 2018. The first Movie cam out in 1966 as the animated TV film starring Boris Karloff as both the narrator and the voice of the Grinch. In 2000 a live action movie starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch was created. There is going to be a new computer animated film starring Benedict Cumberbatch schedule to release on November 9th 2018.
