Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars (in several ways). Typically everyone tends to think stars have perfect lives, The Rock reveals this is not true and has recently opened up about having depression as a teen.
Dwayne Johnson took to twitter to announce to his fans and followers “Depression never discriminates” and “Took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone.”
The depression started after he watched his mother attempt suicide and he even stated “I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere” and openly admitted “I was crying constantly.”
The Rock can even pinpoint the exact moment when it started. He was only 15 and saw his own mother get evicted from their current apartment which led her to walk into oncoming traffic on a busy highway (Interstate 65) in Nashville. Dwayne Johnson, was able to pull her off the highway and effectively save her life. However the event left him with an emotional scar which continued for several years and even heightened by injuries that impacted his potential football career.
As he recounted the scary event, he stated “Big rigs and cars swerving outta the way not to hit her. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road. What’s crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever,” finishing with “Probably best she doesn’t.” (we agree!)
Dwayne quoted “We both healed”, referring to both himself and his mother, but that also came with a stern warning to everyone – “but we’ve always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain.”
Dwayne Johnson has certainly come a long way since the pain he encountered as a teenage. It’s great so see him using his celebrity status to bring light to the struggles than many people encounter and encouraging them to get help.
